Tula Pink: ELIZABETH

At Houston Market in 2014 I attended Tula Pink’s (don’t know who Tula Pink is?  Read her about me) School House presentation of her fabric line ELIZABETH.  Her presentation was incredible.  I was so inspired and I knew that I would be making a quilt out of that line. If you want to hear about the line check out this fun podcast from Modern Sewciety Tula shares very similar thoughts about the inspiration behind the design and other very exciting news in her world.

Lucky for me my favorite local quilt shop ordered the line in. I saw this quilt at Market in Tula’s Booth… SO that is where I began. The quilt pattern is called Victory Garden by Busy Bee Designs.  Tula made other adaptions to the pattern to make it look true to the Union Jack flag.  I stuck to the pattern as closely as I could, although there are a couple minor changes:

1:  I decided instead of picking just 15 prints like the pattern calls for, I collected 15 “main prints”  15 “solids” and 15 “small prints”  I liked having the variety, and loved being able to use every single Elizabeth print in my quilt. I matched one of each of the 3 sets for each of the Union Jack blocks.

2: I made one other change to the pattern to accommodate the adorable Elizabeth faces as the corner stones in the quilt. I fussy cut the “16th Century Selfie” print to 3.5” squares. which then led me to enlarge the sashing to a width of 3.5”   I left off the wide border and continued the corner stones to the borders as well.

And voila, simple as that.

I am SO happy with how my quilt turned out, I LOVE LOVE IT.

I had heard mixed reviews of the pattern, so I wanted to see for myself the results. The one complaint I had heard about the quilt pattern was that there was a lot of scrap fabric left over. I became determined to figure out how to use up all my scraps so that I could show people what to do with the extra.

As I was cutting out the Four corner blocks of the Union Jack block I made sure to cut them the same out of each strip set.  If you are careful in your cutting you end up with the same size of scraps from each stripe set.  I was able to sew together this fun little baby quilt with the scraps.  I just purchased a little extra of the Free Spirit designer solids to border the quilt.

I also made this fun table topper as well.  It was fun to be creative and figure out the uses of the extra pieces.  I still have a few more scraps that I am playing with to see what other fun creative projects I can come up with!

This quickly became the quilt that keeps on giving! The challenge to use up all the leftover scraps was a fun one! I hope you have enjoyed checking them out and are inspired to keep creating with this wonderful fabric!

As if the front of this quilt wasn’t enough… check out the Tula Pink Quilt Backing! Tula has some pretty incredible quilt backing sold at the iheartTULAPINK Shop. Check them out!

As always.. stay UP and keep creating!

I love the Union Jack quilt Tula made. How difficult is it to adapt the pattern the same way Tula did to make it look like the actual flag with the diagonals having different widths?
    Thank you,
    Sherry

Thank you so much! I didn’t change the widths of my stripes, but I think the pattern is super well written and easy to follow and swapping out the size of the other stripe would be easy! The change I did make also was to make the sashing a bit wider to accommodate the Queen Elizabeth faces! Best of luck! Such a fun quilt to make!
