New Pattern: The Checkered Star Quilt

The Checkered Star Quilt Pattern is out and now available for purchase! It’s been such a fun project to work on. I designed the mini version of this quilt block in January 2023 for 12 minis in 12 months and had so much fun making the 6 ½ inch version of this block.

Even when I originally designed it, I imagined it being enlarged and made into a full-size quilt. I didn’t realize that it would end up into a 17 ½ inch block, but I love how it turned out. Now I’m able to apply the same tips and tricks that we used in the small block to the large block, including chain piecing and the four-at-a-time flying geese method.

I recommend trimming up your flying geese blocks with the Wing Clipper II ruler. It was a game changer for trimming flying geese for this project. I discovered it from a friend—Lindsey from Pear Tree Market. It has quickly become my favorite ruler for trimming up flying geese. It comes in multiple sizes to cover different dimensions of flying geese. The Wing Clipper II covers more unique sizes of flying geese, and I was thrilled to discover that it works perfectly for the block dimensions of my Checkered Star Quilt.

There are two ways to fulfill the yardage requirements to make this Quilt: one requires 16 fat quarters and background yardage. The other, which I call the Mixed-Background Version, takes 1/3 yard cuts, which you can mix up for a scrappier look.

I’m so grateful for the friends who tested this pattern for me! Lindsey and Jaree made beautiful versions of this quilt.

This was my first time making a quilt with all Kona solids. I’m usually a print girl, but I enjoyed mocking this up in flat colors and seeing the simple palette come to life! I picked up my fabrics from Sewtopia and Pear Tree Market, which both have kits available.

xoxo,

Kait
