All The Things Tote, Pattern, Sew-A-Long, Soft and Stable

Week 2 of the All The Things Tote Sew-along

We are quilting and cutting out all the pieces this week!

PREPPING YOUR FABRIC FOR QUILTING

This are some simple tips but I find helpful when getting ready to quilt my fabrics.

1: Make sure if your fabric is directional you piece it prior to quilting.
2: Iron your fabric.

I know that are some pretty simple tips but they make a difference in the quilting process!
QUILTING ON YOUR DOMESTIC MACHINE

There are different tools and ways to mark and quilt your panels. If you have a favorite method (pin basting, spray basting etc.) use it! Here is a YouTube video I made sharing about how I like to quilt Soft and Stable. Quilting smaller pieces can make the process a little easier than quilting up an entire yard of fabric on your machine. So try cutting out the Bag Body, End panels and Pockets out an inch bigger than the dimensions listed and make some quilt sandwiches After the quilting is finished you will trim and square up each piece. To the listed sizes in the pattern.
QUILTING WITH A BASTING SPRAY

I have never tried using a basting spray until this week! I had seen this particular spray recommended by Tula Pink during a video about quilting bag panels. I bought it awhile ago and was excited to have the chance to try it out and share all the details with you. I really liked how easy it was to keep the layers together. (No pins poking my fingers!) I did spray it outside because I didn’t want to get glue anywhere inside. I think I could have used a bit more glue than I did, some of the corners came up a bit, but overall it was pretty easy and a great alternative to pinning the layers together. I did find that my machine needle did end up with a little bit of glue on it so I changed my needle after I was done quilting the panels.
QUILTING GUIDE

I love using my sewing machine guide for quilting anything on my domestic machine. I default to crosshatch quilting because you only have to mark a few lines. and I think it looks so cute! I quilted the panel in the picture below with a 1” scale.  You can also find a fabric that has a pattern that is easy to follow, or even try your hand at some free motion quilting. The panels aren’t too big to manage in the machine so might be a great opportunity to try out something new!
CUTTING

The rest of this weeks assignment is to finish the cutting for the bag! Trim up those quilted panels and cut out handles + bindings! You will be all ready to assembly this tote next week!
I will be sharing a few more videos on my process on Instagram this week, so be sure to follow along! Post your progress on Instagram to the #AllTheThingsToteSA hashtag!
