The Truvy Bag

This bag pattern has been in the making for over a year. I made my first sample out of an old Amy Butler print that is an all-time favorite of mine. I thought to myself, “If this doesn’t work out, and I only manage to make it once, I want to use fabric I will love for a long time.” To my surprise and joy, it worked out really well and just took me a little while to get the pattern finalized. I’ve now made 4 of these bags and have 3 others in the works. It’s addicting! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

This bag has 4 separate vinyl zipper compartments. The pockets in the body of the bag have significant depth to them, so they will hold a lot of things. The two removable vinyl snap pockets make it easy to see what’s inside.

I named this pattern after another favorite niece. I have lots of favorites. Truvy was my first niece and is one of the biggest hearted kids I know! I can’t wait to get her one of her own Truvy bags and imagine it will be filled with all her stuffed animals. Love you Truv.

While designing this pattern, I used all my favorite Byannie’s supplies and notions such as: Soft and Stable, Handbag Zippers, and a Magnetic sew-in snap. I also used metal snaps in this pattern—a first for me, but I quickly discovered how easy they were to install. Check out this new YouTube video that shows how to install metal snaps using a heavy-duty snap pliers.

I’ve always loved working with vinyl, but it can be a challenge. I made a video with some tips for sewing vinyl as a companion to my Hello Pouches pattern, and I’ll share it here again because it could be helpful as you’re sewing the Truvy Bag as well.

I can’t wait to see what you fill your truly bag with! I have a few ideas of how I want to use my bag shown below. Remember to share yours with this hashtag: #thetruvybag. Thanks to my good friend Kristen of @kperreaultcreates for taking these photos for me! I made this version of the Truvy Bag out of Kimberly Kights upcoming collection called Smol for Ruby Star Society. Counting the days till I can get my hands on more!

Check out these photos from a few of my amazing pattern testers!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my new pattern. I hope you love it as much as I do! If you’d like to grab a finishing kit to make one of your own Truvy bags do so here:

What a wonderful bag! I would love to make one…probably more than one 🙂 The problem is that I live in England and I really cannot justify the postage so it makes it impossible for me to have. I would love it if a PDF copy became available.
Your niece is gorgeous by the way 🙂

Hi there. This looks amazing. The only thing I have struggling with is how to figure out the size of the bag as well as the pockets. I can see how it would be incredibly universal. Can you point me in the direction to where those dimensions may be?
    Thank you so very much!

    1. Kaitlyn says:

Hi Shannon, Thank you so much. The dimensions are listed on the back cover of the pattern. The bag is 9” high from the base to the top. 11.5” wide at its widest point, (It tapers up just a bit on the sides) and 6” deep. Hope this is helpful for you! Have a great day.

      1. Tracey says:

Hi Kaitlyn, You sent this to me instead of or as well as Shannon who asked the question about the size of the bag. Just in case she didn’t get an answer. Have a nice day 🙂

I like the looks of the Truvy Bag but I’m wondering what keeps it closed at the top when it’s in the standing position.

    1. Kaitlyn says:

Thank you! There is a sewn in magnet snap that keeps it closed at the top!

      1. Linda says:

Excellent! Thank you for reply. I will be placing my order shortly (today or tomorrow)

    Hi Kaitlyn
Do you have a video I can watch. I find it easier to watch a video and read the directions.

Please email me when you have the instructional video edited and posted for the Truvy Bag. Though I am a pretty experienced bag maker, I am stuck and frustrated.

I added the video a couple of days ago. It covers attaching the Double zip pocket to the body of the bag and binding. Here is the link:
